Hydrology and dams are two fields that are obviously closely related. Yet each topic can be largely studied without consideration to the other. The fact is that most of the analyses developed in a hydrological study for dams are not dependent from the type of the structure nor its characteristics. Its location is just important to determine the quantity and variability of the water inflow available for useful use (irrigation, energy production) and the properties of the unusual hydrological events threatening the dam (floods and their intensity). But the hydrological studies do not address the dam structure itself.
