This Bulletin examines the relationship between reservoirs and slope stability, and the direct and indirect effects of unstable slopes on reservoirs and their operation. Although the emphasis is on movements in soil and rock, the wide definition of unstable slopes also includes, for instance, ice and snow avalanches, and lahars. However, ice, snow and lahar stability problems are not treated in detail in this Bulletin. The Bulletin aims to inform development agencies, technical personnel, owners/operators and government institutions involved with reservoirs about the range of hazards and risks which may result from landslides. It endeavours to give guidance to the developers and owners of reservoir projects on how reservoir landslide risks can be identified, treated and managed to control risks.
