For almost 5.000 years dams and reservoirs have served to ensure an adequate water supply by storing hydro resources in times of surplus and releasing them in times of scarcity, thus also preventing or mitigating floods and droughts.
ICOLD, along with other players in the hydro sector, leads the profession to ensure that dams are built and operated safely, efficiently, economically, and are environmentally sustainable and socially equitable so that nations are ready to face the challenges of the 21st century in the development and management of the world’s water and hydropower resources.
